Sometimes an investigation confirms what a client suspects. Sometimes it does not.

There was no confrontation and no attempt by our investigators to determine whether the claim itself was genuine or fraudulent.

A good investigation should not begin simply because somebody is available to deploy. Before we determine how an instruction should proceed, we first need to understand what the client knows, what remains uncertain and what actually needs to be established.
That distinction can completely change the direction of an investigation.
The first stage is understanding the circumstances, the client’s objective and the lawful purpose of the proposed investigation.
Clients often approach us with a considerable amount of information. Our job at this stage is to understand what is relevant, what remains uncertain and what question the investigation actually needs to answer.
Only then can we determine the most appropriate way forward.
Before operational activity begins, we assess the information available and determine whether additional intelligence is required to support the investigation.

Private investigation can involve establishing information that another person may prefer to remain private. That does not provide unlimited authority to obtain it.
Lawful purpose matters. Proportionality matters. Privacy and data protection matter. Where evidence may later be considered by insurers, solicitors, tribunals or courts, the manner in which that evidence was obtained can be as important as the evidence itself.
There are circumstances where we will decline an instruction or recommend a different approach because the proposed investigation is not appropriate. Obtaining an answer by the wrong means can create a significantly greater problem than the one a client originally asked us to investigate.
